Lipedema vs cellulite: know the difference
These two get confused constantly — and the confusion hurts women in both directions. Some panic over normal cellulite; others spend years blaming themselves for what is actually a medical condition. Let's clear it up.

Cellulite: a texture, not a condition
Cellulite is the dimpled appearance that shows up when fat presses against the connective tissue under the skin — mostly on thighs, hips and butt. Up to 90% of women have it, at every size and fitness level. It's cosmetic, it's normal, and its appearance responds to the two levers you control: building muscle and modest fat loss (the full strength-training guide is here).
Lipedema: a real medical condition
Lipedema is a chronic disorder of fat distribution, almost exclusively in women. Signs that point toward lipedema rather than cellulite:
- Symmetrical, disproportionate enlargement of legs (sometimes arms) that doesn't match the rest of your body
- Pain, tenderness, or easy bruising in the affected areas — cellulite doesn't hurt
- The area resists diet and exercise even when the rest of you changes
- Feet and hands typically stay unaffected (a "cuff" at the ankles)
- Often runs in families and flares at hormonal shifts — puberty, pregnancy, menopause
If that list sounds like you, please see a doctor — ideally one familiar with lipedema. It's frequently misdiagnosed as "just weight," and proper diagnosis opens real treatment options (compression, specialized care, and in some cases surgery). You deserve answers, not another diet.
The quick comparison
- Feel: cellulite is painless · lipedema is often tender or painful
- Pattern: cellulite is dimpled texture · lipedema is disproportionate volume, both sides
- Response: cellulite's look improves with muscle + fat loss · lipedema fat largely resists both
- Who: cellulite = most women · lipedema = an estimated 1 in 9
Either way: strength helps
For cellulite, progressive resistance training is the method. For diagnosed lipedema, exercise doesn't remove the affected fat — but strength work supports mobility, joints, and mental health alongside medical care. Movement is never wasted.
